The causes of pigmentation are many, some of them are explained below-

  • Certain medicines such as anti-malarial and anti-depressants can cause pigmentation because excess intake of these medicines increases the level of melanin in the body.
  • Cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy for treatment also suffer from pigmentation because of high definition techniques used. Pigmentation is caused as a side effect of the therapy.
  • Drastic hormonal changes in the body also results in pigmentation. Especially during pregnancy, ladies suffer a roller coaster change in their hormones. This affects the melanin production in the body.
  • Exposure to sun rays for a longer period and daily also causes skin pigmentation because it also induces the production of melanin in the body.
  • A rare endocrine disease named ‘Addison’s disease’ also results in hyper pigmentation. The pigmentation occurs on the parts of the body exposed to sun rays like face, neck, skin folds, and hands. It can also reach to knees and elbows because they are more prone to exposure.
  • Chemicals used in some treatments also result in pigmentation because the products used to affect the hormonal and melanin balance of the body.
  • Consuming birth control medicines and then eliminating its usage suddenly also trigger the hormonal balance.

Doctors are still unsure of the exact causes of pigmentation in the body but one thing they are sure about is hormonal imbalance. A trigger or sudden change in the hormonal balance results in darker skin cells. The hormonal balance can be triggered in various ways but the most drastic is during pregnancy. Though the condition is not serious or harmful, still the treatment is important. It can be cured by certain skin treatments, ointments, or dermatology products. The medicines may leave a side effect, therefore home remedies or switching to Ayurveda is a wise decision.
